Join the Pipsqueakery team as a Volunteer or Intern.

Learn about getting involved.

  • The Pipsqueakery has five full-time staff members (including Alex and Jason) and volunteers are folks who save lives! Thank you for being interested in helping these overlooked animals. All volunteers must be 18+ unless they have prior approval and must have transportation to southern Bloomington, about 15 minutes south of Mays Greenhouse. Shift times and dates are flexible, but the folks who come by 1x weekly are the backbone of what we do! To remain an active animal care volunteer, we ask for a minimum of 8 hours a month, unless you’ve talked to us and gotten approved for something else.

  • Animal Care Interns assist with daily animal care, including the feeding, cleaning, and socialization of various animals. Some medical care will be involved, typically oral medications. This includes hands-on care for the adoptable animals, unadoptable animals in the sanctuary, and releasable wildlife patients. Animal Care Interns come into contact with a wide range of species and gain competency in a wide range of tasks. Animal care interns typically come by for 12 hours weekly.

  • This program incorporates the animal care aspect of internships while also adding additional medical opportunities. On average, The Pipsqueakery does 1,500 onsite surgeries annually thanks to our staff veterinarian! Animal Care and Veterinary Interns assist with surgery prep, assisting the veterinarian during surgery, and post-surgical recovery. Surgery frequency varies depending on case load, 1x weekly is typical but frequency can decrease to 2x monthly. Interns rotate out what surgeries they attend and are scheduled in advance so everyone can gain experience, however, pre-surgery preparations will be consistently done by everyone. Interns for this position typically come by for 16 hours weekly on surgical weeks, otherwise 12 hours weekly.

Thank you for your interest in an internship with The Pipsqueakery! To apply to any of our internship programs, please send your resume and a short cover letter to wildlife@thepipsqueakery.org.
